Effects of Light Stimuli on Desmodium Gyrans Lateral Leaflet Movement Rhythms

چکیده
Rhythmic up down movements of the lateral leaflets in the plant Desmodium gyrans (L.F.) DC. have been studied. Leaflet movements were recorded with a video-computer system, where the digital video signals from the CCD camera were processed in an ATARI 1040 ST computer using special software. The average period of the lateral leaflet movements at 24C was estimated to be 3.5 min. It is proposed, however, that the rhythmic movements of the lateral leaflets might be due to the movement of water across the motor cells, i.e. shrinking and expansion of motor cells, and proton pumps, membrane potential changes and ion transports are responsible for water uptake and loss in motor cells. Leaflet movements in the presence of light stimuli were then studied. It was found that the leaflet always moved towards the direction of the light, whether it was applied from the abaxial or from the adaxial part of the pulvinus. A strong effect was found in both instances, namely the reduced amplitude of the leaflet movement and thus a shortened period. When the abaxial part was exposed to light, the leaflet oscillated in a lower position, but when the adaxial part was illuminated, it oscillated in an upper Detailed instructions for typing your article are given in the following. Light-dependent changes in the leaflet movement rhythm of the plant Desmodium gyrans.
The movements of the lateral leaflets of the Indian telegraph plant Desmodium gyrans (L. F.) DC, have earlier been studied in detail with regards to the effects of chemicals, DC currents, and static magnetic fields. In the present paper we have discussed the oscillation of the lateral leaflets under the influence of white light of various light levels (0-75 micromol x m(-2) x s(-1)), produced b...
متن کاملPhase response curve for the ultradian rhythm of the lateral leaflets of Desmodium gyrans using DC current pulses.
In the present study the leaf movement rhythm was perturbed by the application of DC current pulses (15 microA, 10 seconds, voltage applied: 10 V) to the upper part of the pulvinus, passing through the pulvinus and its stalk. The pulses were applied at four different positions of the leaflets: when the leaves were at the lowermost position, when moving up, at the uppermost position and when mov...
متن کاملLesions of the Intergeniculate Leaflet Lead to a Reorganization in Circadian Regulation and a Reversal in Masking Responses to Photic Stimuli in the Nile Grass Rat
Light influences the daily patterning of behavior by entraining circadian rhythms and through its acute effects on activity levels (masking). Mechanisms of entrainment are quite similar across species, but masking can be very different. Specifically, in diurnal species, light generally increases locomotor activity (positive masking), and in nocturnal ones, it generally suppresses it (negative m...
متن کاملNon-photic manipulations induce expression of Fos protein in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and intergeniculate leaflet in the rat.
Expression of Fos protein in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) is considered a cellular correlate of light-induced phase-shift of circadian rhythms in rodents. Non-photic stimuli also induce phase shifts, but their effects on Fos expression have not been established. We examined induction of Fos protein in SCN and IGL regions, in response to cage change, intrap...

Prolonged constant light exposure causes disruptions in circadian rhythms, resulting in splitting of circadian activity rhythms in hamsters and arrhythmicity in rats. Hamsters with lesions of the thalamic intergeniculate leaflet do not exhibit constant light-induced disruptions in rhythmicity. We have shown that circadian rhythms of rats with monosodium glutamate-induced neurotoxic damage to vi...
